Volunteer Services Program

Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport has a large number of volunteers that help in many ways. Volunteers help by rocking babies, reading to children, teaching sewing to long-term patients, cancer patient art program, delivering books, magazines, and snacks, and helping in many other ways. Our volunteers truly help us carry out the patient care segment of our mission by allowing us to provide quality healthcare services with compassionate and personal services. You’ll be amazed at the things you will learn about Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and the gratification you will gain from helping those in need.

To become involved:

Contact the Volunteer Services Office via telephone or email and request a volunteer application. The Volunteer Services Coordinator will contact you to arrange a convenient time to discuss your area of volunteer interest.  During that meeting, you will learn more about the program and a wide range of opportunities.

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care Department focuses on the spiritual well-being and support of patients and staff. Some of the services available from hospital chaplains include:

  • Responding to emergency calls, deaths and codes where the presence of the Pastoral Care Staff has been determined to be necessary for the Spiritual Support of the patient and/or family
  • Pre-surgery prayer with patient and family
  • Daily rounds in our critical care units including MICU, SICU, PICU, Neonatal ICU, Neurosurgical ICU, Burn Unit
  • Regular scheduled Sunday Church Service in the Psychiatric Unit
  • Community outreach to ministerial alliances and groups interested in being of service
  • Provide religious literature from various denominations as requested by patient and/or family
  • Contacting outlying clergy at the request of patient and/or family

A hospital Chaplain is available from 8:00 a.m. until midnight 7 days a week. An on call chaplain is available from midnight to 8:00 a.m. at the request of Nursing Administrative Staff Support. To request a hospital chaplain, patients and families should ask the nurse to contact a chaplain on their behalf or the patient and/or family may contact the Pastoral Care Services Office at 318.675.5534. World-Class Cancer Care – Close to Home

The affiliation between St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and LSU Health Sciences Center – Shreveport became official on October 1, 1995. The affiliation allows many St. Jude patients to return home for most of their medical care, which helps maintain a sense of normalcy for pediatric patients and their families. The Shreveport Affiliate Clinic brings St. Jude cutting-edge medical treatments and compassionate care to patients across the area.

  • The clinic has had more than 28,000 patient visits in the past 10 years
  • The clinic has 5 exam rooms and 5 treatment chairs
  • The Children’s Hospital at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport is a regional resource for pediatricians and their patients who need specialty and subspecialty care and includes a pediatric intensive care unit
  • LSU Health Shreveport faculty are the physicians who treat patients at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport
  • St. Jude clinical research trials are available if the patient qualifies
  • Treats cancers and hematological diseases, such as sickle cell anemia

The St. Jude Affiliate Program offers St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital clinical trials to more children close to home. The St. Jude Affiliate Program is a network of pediatric hematology-oncology clinics, hospitals and, in some cases, universities united to extend the mission of St. Jude. The physicians and staff at these sites work in collaboration with the staff of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to deliver state-of-the-art care and innovative clinical trials to children with cancer and blood disorders.
